Blog > A Simple Home Repair Disaster
A Confession by Jack Little
Have you ever had a simple household repair to do when the harder you worked at it the worse it became?
The simple repair of a curtain rod bracket pulled away from the wall was one of those for me. It pulled out due to the weight of the curtains. A simple task: just remove the screws and reinstall the anchors. Got it down!
My wife was confident I could fix it, as was I. I followed my instinct pulled out my brand-new drill and began the installation.
The hole was larger than originally thought. So, I went to the local hardware store and bought larger anchors and screws to fit. When I returned home, I began the installation - one screw fit and the other didn’t. So, I began expanding the holes to install the anchors. The hole got a little larger than the anchor bolt.
My wife began offering her ideas and I could tell she began losing confidence in my repair and procedure. I returned to the hardware store.
Another clerk gave his advice and suggested a different anchor bolt. When I returned to install it, it too was larger than the hole.
Repeating the same exercise, I drilled to make the hole larger…. larger than the anchor bolt.
After another trip to the hardware store and meeting with another clerk who had another idea and apparatus, I returned to install.
My wife again offered her advice and said she could call our handyman, but I still knew I could do it. So, I pulled out my handy-dandy drill and proceeded to drill to expand the hole. Again, the hole was larger than the anchor’s capacity.
At this time my wife said she would call our local handyman. After messing with this all afternoon, I succumbed. The handyman came repaired it in 10 minutes and charge $80.00.
So much for my new drill and my keen insight.
