Artist’s Error!

Artwork can be VERY expensive, especially if you need a large piece of artwork to cover a big empty wall in your house. But guess what? It doesn’t have to be expensive nor do you have to be creative with this DIY artwork project I’m about to show you. I will warn you, my painting did not turn out the way I had planned simply because of the design I chose, an artist's error! However, if you don’t make the same mistake I did, your painting can still turn out BEAUTIFULLY!

Supplies:

  • Blank Canvas: Head to your nearest Hobby Lobby or art store for this. I bought a 40x60 blank canvas for $60 at Hobby Lobby!
  • Acrylic Paint: Pick your acrylic paint colors that will go on your canvas anywhere from 3-4 colors. Picking a few primary colors is great because they can be mixed to make more colors.
  • Joint Compound: Buy a large bucket of joint compound, I found mine at Ace Hardware.
  • Trowel: Get a few types of trowels with different edging. This will be used to apply the joint compound onto the canvas.
  • Paint Brush: Get various sizes of paint brushes, they don’t have to be expensive.

I laid my canvas out, dipped the trowel in the joint compound and started spreading it all over the canvas (my husband wanted to join in on the fun). You can make designs with the trowel and if you mess up– it smooths right over with one swipe of the trowel. Also, it takes about 48 hours to completely dry so you can always take breaks when needed. If you're stuck on what to do, hop on over to Pinterest for some inspiration!

Now when I made my design, I really didn’t know what I was going for. I figured I could make it up as I go (big mistake on my part). What I should of done is had my inspiration picture first before starting but it is what it is. I took a week off to figure out what I wanted my painting to look like. I went into an antique store one day and there it was. The painting of my dreams minus the fact that it was $500 (LOL). It was perfect, however the design was completely different from what I had on my canvas but I decided to work with what I had on my canvas. I did try sanding the canvas down but it would have taken hours so I just started painting away…

I’m going to be honest… My painting turned out terribly. I wish I had my inspiration picture before starting. But you know what they say– “There’s no mess ups in art.” However, I’m over here trying to figure out how to fix this. In the meantime, I’m going to take a step back and figure out how I’m going to make this work. I will keep you guys updated, so stay tuned!
