Meet Me at the Barre!

On January 22, 2017, I walked into a barre studio for the first time.

I had decided that this would be the year that I got back into a fitness routine and needed to find something that didn’t include throwing truck tires or doing burpees, easy on the joints (I had a nagging shoulder injury from my collegiate tennis playing days), and close to home to help hold myself accountable. After numerous Google searches, I found out about Studio Barre James Island. It was low-impact, high intensity, and incorporated a mix of interval movements from ballet, yoga, and pilates. It was located at the Terrace Plaza, within walking distance of my house. All of the boxes were checked. It took me two weeks after first reading about it to hype myself up enough to sign up for a class. I had never done an organized group fitness class before, so I was beyond nervous.

After walking into the mirrored studio and getting a rundown of what to expect in class, I met my first friend within 30 seconds. I’ve always been blessed with the gift of gab, and as soon as a woman set up next to me, I looked at her, smiled, and said, “Hey, I’m Taylor, this is my first class, and I’m super nervous.”   Her name was Becca; this was her first class, too, so we bonded over our nervousness, and after a couple of minutes of chatting, she said that she had moved to the area about three months ago and wanted to buy but wasn’t sure where exactly she wanted to be. I told her I worked in real estate and had lived in Charleston my whole life, so if she had any questions, I’d be happy to answer them. We ended up chatting for 45 minutes after class (which we survived, by the way, barely), and I told her everything she wanted to know about Riverland Terrace, the neighborhood next to the barre studio that I’ve lived in my whole life.

Becca became the first real estate client I met through the barre studio, and I’m happy to report that I’ve had several since then. Even after being transferred to Austin, Texas, for work, we remain in touch, and anytime anyone she knows is coming to Charleston, she always puts them in contact with her friend Taylor, the Charleston expert and barre instructor. That’s right, the girl who had to take two weeks to hype herself up to take her first barre class is now an instructor and has been one for almost five years!

Whether you have questions about Charleston real estate or barre or need someone to help hype you up to try something new, I’m your gal!
