Pizza Perfection on Huger

I hesitate to even mention this North Central gem.  It's that perfect neighborhood restaurant where you can go on a date or casually grab pizza with friends.  The bartenders are friendly, the waitstaff knowledgeable, and the food phenomenal.  It's a little off the beaten path but delivers ambiance and charm. Renzo is one of Charleston's best restaurants - but don't tell anyone. :)

My husband and I went recently on a quiet Saturday evening.  There were a few seated parties but we were able to easily grab a table without a reservation - no easy feat in this town.  Renzo is a lowkey trattoria with worn, wooden floors and a mid-century design aesthetic.

We started with meatballs in their arrabbiata sauce.  Three appetizer-size meatballs came out generously surrounded by their lush marinara.  The beef and pork combo worked perfectly with the slightly spicy sauce for a perfect pre-pizza bite.  We washed the appetizer down with a sumptuous IPA and a spicy, savory vodka cocktail. For the main course, we split a marinara and margherita pizza. Renzo's brick ovens are visible in the dining room and do an amazing job of cooking the crust to a bubbly crisp. The thin crust melds perfectly with the fresh basil and mozzarella and homemade sauce on the margherita pizza.  The marinara was slightly better in my opinion, even sans sauce.  The marinara made the pizza with the addition of chili oil which added a lively layer to an already great bite.

In addition to pizza, Renzo also offers some sumptuous pasta and appetizers including their famous Caesar salad.
