Disappointing Weekend Leaves South Carolina Sports Fans Scratching Their Heads

The Gamecocks and Tigers were both happy to find themselves at home this past weekend after road trips the week before. The Gamecocks were looking to bounce back after a tough loss at LSU and the Tigers were hoping to keep the momentum going after trouncing Boston College. Both teams' aspirations were cut short, however. South Carolina could not seem to get anything going this week against the Oklahoma Sooners. Everything they attempted on offense was met with stern push back from a tough Sooners defense. The home fans in Williams-Brice stadium left the game with a familiar feeling, disappointment, as Oklahoma was victorious 26-7. The Tigers were not fortunate enough to avoid the same demise as the Gamecocks, as they too fall. ACC newcomers Southern Methodist came to Death Valley and did not seem phased by the daunting enviorment. The Mustangs took care of business against the Tigers, winning 35-24. Clemson fans, along with their coach Dabo Swinney, left the game Saturday evening scratching their heads, wondering how this season has gotten away from them. Next week, the Tigers will lick their wounds during their bye. The Gamecocks will not have as much time to recover, as they face a red hot Alabama team.

Elsewhere in the State, home town favorites The Citadel took on West Carolina at home. In a high scoring shootout, the Bulldogs fell short 38-45. Familiar foes Furman and Wofford faced each other on the gridiron, where the Terriers got the upper hand and bested the Paladins 31-13. And finally, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers find a much needed victory on the road against Appalachian State 45-37.
