Blog > Vern's : Come For the Vibes, Stay for the Food.
In a city whose culinary prowess is known far and wide, recent newcomer Vern's has managed to cut a wide swath in the culinary scene. It also doesn't hurt that the restaurant's top chef, Daniel "Dano" Heinze, was just nominated for a James Beard award for Best Chef: Southeast.
I recently dined at Vern's with my family over the holidays. Vern's is tucked deep in Elliotborough and, unlike many establishments, is surrounded by residential homes, lending a neighborhood feel. Past the unassuming sign lies a darkened dining room and bar with candles adorning each table and the open kitchen lit up in the background. Hip hop and house music softly beat in the background, and the tables were full of mostly trendy millennials and Gen Z'ers. This is typically a wait list-only venue, so be sure to make your reservation thirty days out.
We perused the menu, and my large table sampled almost all of it. The stand-out dishes were the pasta entrees. The bucatini with black truffle was sinfully decadent and balanced, while the gnocchetti sardi with walnut arugula pesto had an earthy approach that melted in the mouth. The satsuma dessert also stood out and was unlike anything I'd had before. It was like an icy, elevated Orangesicle that you kept sampling until the bowl was clean.
Vern's is now one of my top favorites in Charleston, joining the ranks of Chasing Sage, Chubby Fish, and others. It's a must-try if you're in the city. It's also in one of my favorite areas on the peninsula, Elliotborough. Elliotborough has an amazing, intimate neighborhood feel with so many top-tier restaurants within its borders.
