Are you planning a move?

I am moving from one house to another, and I have learned so much! I hope these tips help you.

  • Use old clothes to save on packing materials - I had some clothes I planned to give away so I used them to pack and once I moved in and unpacked I donated them.
  • A great way to ensure your expensive wine glasses don’t break is to use a wine storage box. I went to the local liquor stores around town and they are happy to give them to you. Wine storage boxes typically have slots where you can place glasses after wrapping them in old clothing or newspaper to save on bubble wrap too!
  • Avoid the panic of not knowing which box your toothpaste is in by packing an overnight bag filled with essentials, including a change of clothes, toiletries, chargers, and medication.
  • I bought clear storage boxes at Walmart and used them instead of ordinary cardboard boxes to hold box cutters, scissors, paper towels and cleaning supplies that you might need immediately in your new home. Placing items in a clear bin differentiates them and makes them instantly recognizable. Very helpful for other things also.
  • Definitely ask your family, friends or neighbors when shopping around when you’re trying to pick a mover. There’s a lot to understand about moving quotes, there's flat fees and then hourly and of course the size of the truck and how many men you will need mine was based on the weight of my furniture and boxes so I prepared a list of everything I had before calling movers.
  • If possible, try to enter the new home before your moving company delivers. This was a life saver for me; I was able to move items a week in advance and clean the bathrooms and kitchen. Not fun but for me, necessary :-)
  • I used Ziploc baggies to separate screws, nuts and bolts or other small pieces of hardware that you need to reassemble beds and other pieces of furniture.
  • Laundry hampers, baskets and suitcases are great for packing items and cuts down on the need for single-use cardboard boxes.
Make sure all of your boxes are labeled, indicating where they need to go in your new home.
  • Differentiate boxes that contain valuables and those that need to be unpacked right away.
  • Last but not least, protect anything that might need extra coverage, including TVs, computer equipment, and sofas, by covering them in a few layers of shrink wrap.
