Boone Hall Market

My last blog, “What the Heck is an Agrihood?” explained about the growing trend of neighborhoods that somehow incorporate a garden or farm for the neighbors to benefit from. The rising trend was most likely sparked by people wanting more and more to live healthier lifestyles and caring about where their food comes from and how it’s grown. For those of us living in Mt. Pleasant who aren’t living in an agrihood, we can take advantage of locally grown products offered by Boone Hall Farms with their market conveniently located on Hwy 17.

Boone Hall Farms is well known for a variety of reasons, including yearly scheduled events like Fright Nights in the fall and the world’s largest oyster festival in the winter, but it is appreciated regularly on a daily basis by those of us nearby for its charming Market. Boone Hall Farms website describes their Market as “part farmers market, part specialty store.” I couldn’t agree more with this description, and it is the perfect place to pick up a hostess gift at the same time as getting a side dish for dinner.

It’s often a specialty item that will get me in the doors at Boone Hall Farms Market, but once I’m there I can’t be stopped from picking up some locally grown fruit, not to mention I literally never leave without grinding my own peanut butter! You can’t get much fresher items when you have seafood brought straight from the local docks and produce that’s from right across the street! They stack their hand even more by carrying a variety of Certified SC Products that are made locally and a line of specialty items made exclusively for them, including a coffee blend.

You might be thinking they couldn’t make this place anymore charming, but then I haven’t told you about their cafe yet. The Market Cafe serves just what you’d expect at a local roadside farmers market, southern comfort food, including collards, fried green tomatoes, fried shrimp (local of course), and much more. They carry desserts like pecan and key lime pies that are made in house, but also offer cakes and other sweets made locally by Wildflour Pastry.

Last but not least, one of the most unique things I’ve seen is their Grill Nights. Every Friday and Saturday night between 6:30 and 7:40, on a first-come, first-serve basis, they allow guests to personally pick out their choice of fresh seafood from the Seafood Department or their choice of steaks or chops from the Lowcountry Butcher Shoppe. The Market Cafe prepares its selection, and it is served with a farm-fresh side right there in the cafe. Definitely check this out, but make sure to call ahead for parties of six or more.

If you would like to live closer to our local Boone Hall Farms Market, both Fulton Park and Pinckney Farms have new builds available within walking distance. Give me a call and let’s go see what they have to offer and then we can take a stroll through the market, I guarantee you won’t leave empty-handed!
