“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” — Mahatma Gandhi
As we near Thanksgiving, our annual season of giving thanks, it’s time to reflect on how blessed we are but, more importantly, how we can be of service to others. How can we give back to our community, instead of focusing our efforts inward? How can we further the mission of an organization or cause to make the world a better place?
I was privileged to work with an organization for five years, raising awareness and funding for a childhood cancer research lab at MUSC. But now the time has come to focus my time and energy to a new cause. As the year closes, one of my goals is to choose a worthy cause. This time I believe I will work towards helping our great veterans, who sacrifice so much for our country. They have given so much, so in turn, I will give to them.
For now though, I’m dropping off a small token of appreciation to a child of an active military agent. I hope this child opens my present on Christmas Day and enjoys the book in years to come, and knows that no matter how small the gesture, we can all make positive ripples in the world - together creating an ocean of change.
