Mario’s Peruvian Chicken

While out on a libations run recently, I came across a fairly new dining addition to be Mount Pleasant restaurant scene, Mario’s Peruvian Chicken. My husband and I both looked at each other, wondering what makes chicken ‘Peruvian’-style. We wandered into the restaurant, enticed by the delicious smells and wanting to find out about this cooking method. I’m so glad we did!

Peruvian-style chicken, or Pollo a la Brasa as it’s known south of the equator, was first introduced in Peru in the 1950s by Swiss hoteliers for their wealthy patrons. Since then, it’s become a hugely popular dish across the masses and can be found on almost every street corner. A whole bird is generously marinated in a spice mixture overnight. The wet rub consists of cumin, paprika, lime juice, and other tasty ingredients to transfer the chicken from your average dinner into a symphony for your taste buds. After the marinade is complete, the chicken is then fire-roasted on a rotisserie. The end- result is something you just can’t miss.

That day, my husband and I walked into Mario’s without any knowledge of this poultry application but left true believers in this neighborhood gem serving up some of the tastiest chicken in town. We were able to order half a bird and two sides for $12.95. For those easy mid-week meals, you can also pick up a whole bird to feed the family for $17+, including tax. In addition to the chicken, two sauces are standard - Ali Amarillo and Rocoto. Both are ridiculously tasty accompaniments to the chicken but if you like a little heat, definitely go with the Rocoto.

There’s a variety of sides, but for the Latin traditionalists, go with the sweet plantains and slightly-salty yuca. You’ll be able to satisfy all of your carb-cravings with these two favorites.

Whether you’re looking for a tasty alternative to fast food or quick weekday dinner, give Mario’s a try. Your taste buds will thank you.

Mario’s Peruvian Chicken is a hop, skip and a jump from many Mount Pleasant neighborhoods surrounding Town Center like Hidden Lakes. Many of these gorgeous brick-clad beauties are waterfront and go from the 500s to the 800s. Contact me today to learn more about this popular neighborhood - and maybe we can grab a bite at Mario’s, too.
