Blog > Hurricane Precautions
With hurricane season now upon us, it's time to start developing your hurricane plan to protect your biggest investment - your house -and your loved ones. There are a variety of precautions to take in the event of inclement weather, and here along the southeastern region of the U.S., it's not a matter of if a storm will strike but when.
The first step in developing a plan is to identify your assets at risk and how best to protect them. If you're a homeowner, you may want to research various storm window coverings whether it be accordion shutters or cut-to-size plywood sheets. You may also want to consider the elevation of your home and any surrounding bodies of water which may pose a flood threat to your home. Here in Charleston, typically the city officials will offer free sandbags to place along access points in your home to hopefully assuage flooding. During a storm, keep an eye on the local news for details on where to pick up these bags.
The news is also a vital source of information for evacuation orders and recommendations from your area officials. Heed their warnings and pay close attention to the information given. Whether you opt to stay at home or evacuate, it's always smart to buy provisions and fill your gas tanks. You may want to purchase enough non-perishable food and water to last a couple of weeks in the event of a power outage and/or limited access to grocery stores.
Most importantly, stay safe, and let's hope for a positive outcome this hurricane season.
