This is Part I of a 3-Part Series of Life in Pawleys Island. This week I am going to take you back to Historic Pawley's Island and give you a taste of where it all began! Get ready to feel the ocean breeze through your hair...

In the early 1700's Rice Planters, who owned nearby plantations, began to move their families to the Island to escape mosquitos and escape the heat. They came to catch the Sea Breeze, and once they got a taste of it, they never went back. To this day, Pawley's is famous for its cypress cottages and Pawleys Island Rope Hammock, which was specially created in the late 1800's for catching the Sea Breeze.

A few notable sights to see are the Sea View Inn and Pelican Inn. The Sea View Inn features rustic rooms and decor and beautiful ocean views. The front porch features plenty of rocking chairs, and inside is a library and a cozy living room to curl up in. The Pelican Inn is an 8-room Bed and Breakfast that overlooks the Salt Marsh. It offers hammocks to kick your feet up and relax in and a private boardwalk with direct beach access.

A few other buildings to see? Catch a Sunday service at the Pawleys Island Chapel, Sundays at 10AM. It is the quintessential "Little White Church," sitting directly on the Marsh. Originally built as the Pentecostal Holiness Church, the building has survived 3 hurricanes, including Hugo. It has undergone major restorations including, a foundation replacement, by picking git up and moving it across the street! And just done the road, you will find the Old Town Hall. Serving basically as a historic landmark now since being flooded by Hurricane Matthew in 2016, it sits across the street from the new Town Hall. Ideas for the use of the 600-square-foot building include a place for historical displays, an environmental education building, or an ice cream shop.

One of the oldest Seaside Destinations in the country, Pawley's Island, is still referred to as "arrogantly shabby." In Historic Pawleys, which is located front and center to the beach, you can find everything from simple cottages with screen-only windows to stunning multi-level homes with spectacular ocean views. It is a true plethora of home choices. To see all the available homes in Pawleys Island, click the link below.
