Magnolia Plantation January 2021

I've heard so much about the Plantations in Charleston so we decided to check out Magnolia Plantation on James Island. I love looking at all the old established Southern tree-lined roads with Large Oaks and Spanish Moss hanging off from them.

Here's an interesting legend: Spanish moss became so common in our region. According to the legend, an Indian brave and princess lived on the banks of the bayou. When the princess died, she was buried at the base of a live oak tree. The grieving brave hung her long black braids on the tree limb to mark her grave. I thought that was pretty cool!!!!

So we arrived at one of the best plantations to visit in Charleston, Magnolia Plantation.

We drove there on the first Sunday of 2021, the weather was perfect, air temp was low 60's a great day to walk around. We walked through the gardens slowly enjoying the day and all the historic and gorgeous views. I learned Magnolia was originally a rice plantation and now with Covid-19 the inside of the plantation home wasn't open to the public but we did walk all around that area and definitely going back in the spring to see all the flowers in the gardens in bloom.

For me the best part was visiting the petting zoo, it is amazing! - it's so nice to see animals roaming freely and those who were in fenced-in areas had plenty of space-not crowded at all. It's a very small part of the plantation probably 800 ft with deer wandering around and goats and peacocks and more! The address is 3550 Ashley River Rd Charleston SC 29414.

I actually have photos of one of the dear kissing my husband nonstop- he was holding out his hand with food and all the deer wanted, was to kiss him... LOL, it was so cute, animals and babies know when they are in the presence of a kind soul. It really is a lovely place.
