Blog > NEW Mt Pleasant Library
People have always flocked to Mount Pleasant for many reasons, including the schools. However, many don’t want to venture so far north, but things are ready to change. Growth and development are happening, and north Mt. Pleasant doesn’t seem so far away anymore. Almost all the teens in Mount Pleasant drive to Wando High School every day, and more and more of what a family wants and needs are moving in nearby. Costco opened last year on Faison Road, and CVS Pharmacy joined them this year. Better than both of these, in my opinion, is the Wando Mount Pleasant Public Library that opened in June, and is located right next door to Wando High School at 1400 Carolina Park Blvd.
Public libraries often provide many programs that foster early learning and development. Until now, parents in north Mt. Pleasant had to travel to the Mt. Pleasant Regional Library off of Mathis Ferry or further to take advantage of these programs and facilities. It just makes sense that with so many great schools within only a two-mile radius, there be a large and up-to-date facility nearby providing access to emerging technologies and resources to the growing community.
The new branch is a 40,000 square foot facility that you really need to visit to appreciate. Of course, the library has storytime, but that is just the beginning. On top of having what we have seen at our older branches, this location has a Teen Lounge with Gaming Room, two Creative Studios/Makerspaces, a Learning (Computer) Lab, a Digital Media (Recording) Studio, and two Editing Labs! For those of you who have only thought of a library as a place to find books, you are in for a surprise when you see how much more they offer. You can probably imagine what can be done in a Digital Media Studio with Editing Labs, but you might not realize that a Creative Studio isn’t just about glue and glitter any more. One of the studios is available to people of all ages, and this is where you will find more everyday arts and crafts. Patrons to Creative Studio 2, however, must be 18 years old or older, because this is where all the machines and tools are. There are rules and procedures to follow, including signing a waiver and completing an orientation/training session. All that being said, in this studio, you have at your fingertips sewing machines, a serger, an embroidery machine, Cricut Maker, Silhouette Cameo3, 3D printer, rotary cutters, lightboxes, and even a laser cutter! Remember, this is not Home Ec or Machine Shop, this is your neighborhood library. I can’t imagine a kid not being able to find something interesting to do here.
Of course, if you do not want to be creative and you just want a relaxing place to hang out or somewhere quiet to finish homework, there are plenty of indoor and outdoor reading areas, not to mention private study rooms. The library is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m and Friday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The location makes it a great place for kids to go after school if they want someplace away from home where they can still access technology and even enjoy a snack. If you have any questions about the library, contact them at (843)805-6930 or visit their website.
The library is a welcome addition to the many family-friendly neighborhoods nearby. Kids in Carolina Park can get there on foot, and kids in Park West, Dunes West, and Darrell Creek can get there by bike. If you have an interest in moving to the area or in one of the neighborhoods I mentioned, give me a call or visit my website.
