September is Hurricane Month!

If you’ve never been through a hurricane, here are some resources to help you prepare and relieve your stress. Since 2016, more than 55,000 people have moved to Charleston! Most of our new neighbors have never been through and prepared for a hurricane!

Reduce property damage and get through any hurricane emergency with less stress by preparing before the season begins.

  • Make an emergency plan that is understood by everyone in your household. 
  • EVACUATE EARLY!
  • Plan your evacuation route well ahead of time - Tell someone your destination.
  • Keep non-perishable emergency food on hand - Canned food, boxed food in plastic containers.
  • Take an inventory of your personal property - Make a video with your phone.
  • Review your insurance policies and important legal documents– Store in tightly closed plastic containers.
  • Take steps to protect your home – Declutter drains, bring in outside furniture and potted plants, and anything that will blow away!
  • Download the FEMA App and the SC highway app- 611

Basic Disaster Supplies Kit

  • Water (one gallon per person per day for at least three days, drinking and sanitation)
  • Food (at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food)
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
  • Flashlight
  • First aid kit
  • Extra batteries
  • Pet supplies
  • Medications

Personal Items

  • Masks, hand sanitizer
  • Clothing for each family member for 3 days
  • Toiletries
