Sullivans Island is known for its military history and one can find many historic landmarks on this island. There is Fort Moultrie, built as makeshift palmetto tree log fort and located at the tip of Sullivans Island. This Fort served to protect the entrance of the Charleston harbor together with Battery Thomson and Battery Gadsden. Other landmarks are Stella Maris Church, built in 1869, and the unique triangular shaped lighthouse which can be seen 26 miles away.
