Mt. Pleasant Communities - A Series

I'm hoping this series on communities or subdivisions in Mt. Pleasant is helpful to you. Even if you've lived here forever, you may read about a community or two that you've never heard of.  You may or may not know that Charleston is made up of towns that all have 'subdivisions'. It's not typical all over the country. It does make sense though. The towns are fairly large, so folks don't always know where a street is located. When you tell them the subdivision, it gives them an idea of where you're speaking about.

There are some homes along the main road that are old, quaint and some in disrepair, on large parcels and most likely, heirs properties. They've been here since the beginning and are feeling the squeeze from progress and development.

The first area I'd like to tell you about is along one of the main arteries, Rifle Range Rd. Rifle Range starts at the South end of Mt. Pleasant at Ben Sawyer Blvd. One of the first communities at that end is Harborgate Shores. Harborgate was the location of the US Navy rifle range, which was originally the SC National firing range. Hence the name. The neighborhood was built in the 70s and 80s and the homes are between 1200 and 2400 square feet. There are no amenities but it is only a five-minute drive to the beach on Sullivan's Island. The HOA is not as strict as in some communities. They do allow boats to be parked on the property, so this is an attraction to boat owners, especially being in a coastal town. This end of Rifle Range starts at what they call the Old Village or Old Mt. Pleasant and runs north to the back entrance of Charleston National and the new community Stratton on the Sound.

There are plans on the North end for a large recreation complex.
