The British are coming!

Charleston recently got the welcome addition of a new flight offering - non-stop to London Heathrow. For a smaller city, this is a major travel addition for those wishing to venture across the pond.

I recently had the pleasure of flying on one of the first flights courtesy of British Airways. Having flown internationally a few times, this was far and away the easiest and most enjoyable experience. When arriving at Charleston International for our red-eye flight, we did not wait in a single line. The airport was an absolute breeze to get through and quite dead at ten o'clock at night. We had a couple of glasses of red wine while we waited to board at the one bar that was still open. At the set hour, they called our flight and the boarding process was very smooth. The flight was only 70-80% full so we were able to actually stretch out and use the empty seat in our row. The crew greeted us warmly and we received a free blanket, pillow, and earbuds. For those lucky enough to fly first class, they enjoyed seats that fully reclined and a bevy of other luxury offerings. Once we took off, it was smooth sailing and the food and beverages continued to flow the whole trip. We were offered a choice of chicken, beef, or vegetarian pasta for dinner (which was served at 1 am!) and complimentary bottles of wine which almost everyone selected. We were also given orange juice and water mid-flight along with other snacks that appealed to both the British and American passengers. An hour or so before touchdown, the flight crew came back around with an English breakfast including a bagel with salmon spread, a breakfast bar, fruit and more.

In addition to the culinary selections, we also were treated to many selections of TV, movie, and music which made the seven hours fly by if you chose not to get any shut-eye. For those wishing to sleep, the windows had a selection which would dim the glass to your desired light level. The chairs themselves were comfortable and somewhat spacious for coach.

As we touched down in London, I fully appreciated the entire experience and couldn't ask for more from a direct flight to Europe. I highly recommend the trip to anyone who has a desire to see the fabulous sights in England.
