Sights you just must see...

Every city has a list of sightseeing spots that you should see when you're visiting. Charleston has many since it's a historic city, it has different types of beaches, historic war sites, amazing architecture, and beautiful nature sites.

Rainbow Row I          Rainbow Row

Even longtime residents find the sites enjoyable and often learn something new when they visit downtown. Charleston is a great city to be a 'tourist in your own town'.

The first place I'm writing about today is Downtown Charleston on East Bay Street and it's called Rainbow Row. These thirteen homes were originally right on the water. Since then they filled in the river enlarging the peninsula. Many of the homes were destroyed by fire in 1778. In the mid-1800s, after the Civil War, the area was in near slum conditions. It wasn't until the 1920s that some of the homes were purchased by Susan Pringle Forest who was the founder of what is now called The Preservation Society of Charleston. In the early 1930s, a few more buildings were purchased by Dorothy Haskell Porcher Legge. She was the first to paint the exterior in a Caribbean pink color and the other owners followed suit and painted in pastel colors, hence the name 'Rainbow Row'.

Check out this link showing one residence currently on the market and one that recently sold: Active & Sold Listings Besides the grandeur of the interiors you'll want to take a look at the private backyards and gardens!

If you're looking for photo ops, visit Rainbow Row on East Bay St. between numbers 79 and 107. The ironwork, planters, paint colors, and terraces are spectacular.
