Trout Fishing
The Wando has many types of fish, but the four of the most popular are red and black drum, spotted seatrout, and strippers.
May is the best time of the year for spotted seatrout fishing in the Wando River. To be really successful, there are three important factors to keep in mind. They live in clear, moving water and top-water lures.
- First, the clearer the water, the better. Trout hang out in the clearest water they can find, which also means it’s not always as pristine as you might think.
- Second, the water needs to be moving, not stagnant. This doesn’t include the rising and falling of the tide. If you can find a place where one stream is emptying out into the river, it’s a sure bet your casts will be worthy.
- The third tip is to use top-water lures. As the weather warms up, fish are attracted to the surface where new-fallen insects are making their entrance into spring. Light-weight lures or corks with live-bait dangling just below the surface can bring in a stringer full.
The Wando River Life is an overlooked gem of the Lowcountry.
If you’re an avid angler, follow these tips to catch spotted seatrout:
Water- The clearer the better.
Moving water-Not the rising tide.
Top water fishing – Dangle live bait just under the cork.
