2020 Decorating Trends - What's Coming?

As a realtor, I get to see inside a lot of other people’s homes. Sometimes I walk in the door to a home and think, “how did they get their hands on the entire set from That 70s Show,” and other times I think “what a great idea!”. If you are anything like me, and you struggle making choices with home decor because there are so many options, it’s a good idea to look ahead. To help you out with any home decorating you’re considering in the near future. I’m going to give you a glimpse at what’s trending in 2020!

Starting with paint and palette, some of the colors trending in 2020 might surprise you. Let’s begin with one that shouldn’t surprise you, gray has been trending for many years now. This neutral works so well without being as bland as some of the past preferred wall colors. This makes it an extremely popular color not just for the walls, but for all the main room elements, including furniture, carpet, and textiles. Another continuing favorite is blue. However, the trend has grown from the light coastal shade to include cobalt. I prefer this more vibrant color on upholstery furniture and textiles, but it is making an appearance on walls as well. One of my new favorites is green in all its shades. The deeper and darker shades will be seen in the furniture upholstery and as an accent color in accessories and decorations. Pastels and softer shades will be seen on the walls. Some more surprising color trends for 2020 are pink and purple! Pink is being seen in pastels and pale shades, but the purple is leaning toward the more vibrant shades like lilac and violet. Although pink has been seen covering walls, if that is too bold for you, these are great for textiles and accessories.

Wood will still be on the floors, but it will also be seen all over, from ceilings and columns to furniture, finishes, decorations, doors, and windows. The preferred shades are moving from the lighter woods seen everywhere over the last few years to darker, more luxurious tones.

Texture will also be big in decorating next year, so we will see decorations, including things like rattan, wicker, and jute. Geometric patterns may be seen on the walls and textiles. We will reignite our love for leather in sofas and armchairs and metal will continue to show itself in industrial, oxidized, gold, and silver finishes.

Obviously, I haven’t covered every trend we’ll be seeing, and I would exercise caution even with the ones I have mentioned. When it comes to decorating, it is easy to go overboard and try to incorporate every trend available. Anyone who has lived long enough to own a home knows that all trends come and go and come back again, so pick a couple of things and add them to what you have to keep your home fresh and current.

If you are thinking about selling your home, it’s good to be up-to-date on current trends as your home will be competing with them. Adding some current trends to your home can help it show better and lead to a faster sale! Always talk to your real estate agent before you decide to make any big or drastic changes, they have seen a lot and usually have good tips on how to help your home show its best.

Everyone knows that new home builders use the newest trends in their models. If you are ready for a new look in your home and don’t want to remodel, give me a call and let’s take a look at what’s on the market. And, If you have any trend dos, don’ts, or catastrophes of your own, don’t forget to comment below, and please share a photo if you have one.
