LIBRARY BOX for your neighborhood,Ute Appleby

    - or how to unload unwanted books. I live in a small townhome neighborhood. We often gather in the evening to walk our circular and only road with our dogs and a glass of wine. Always looking to improve our neighborhood, we decided to install a library box to exchange books or sometimes just to unload books and hoping someone else would get good use out of it. It was a great idea but not as easy as we thought. One cannot just dig a hole in the ground and plant the post. Always call the local utility companies before you dig, no matter where. As it turned out, there were 2 cable company lines, a gas line, a power cable, and a water line pretty much in the same spot and right next to where we had planned to dig the hole for the post. So please call before you dig. By law, the utility companies have to mark their lines within 3 business days. Here are some pictures in sequence for this project:       1. Call the utility companies (start with the electrical company) 2. Wait for all lines to be marked 3. Cut the treated lumber 4 x 4 post to the desired height 4. Dig the hole (at least 3 feet down) and set the post 5. Fill hole with cement; make sure post is straight - let cement cure for 2 days 6. Mount the bracket for the library box 7. Set library box on top of bracket and secure with wood screws 8. Decorate and paint the library box as you like it 9. Fill up with books and enjoy !!
