The Cannonborough Beverage Company, located at 1750 Signal Point Road on James Island, has always had a vision for using as many locally sourced products as possible, such as fruits, herbs, and spices. Now, cofounders Matt Fendley and Mick Matricciano, have furthered their mission to support the local economy and give back to the community that has supported their business since its inception nine years ago. A portion of their upcoming expansion will be allocated to an area for other food production businesses. The space, when completed, will house a commissary kitchen to be used by the next generation of Charleston Food Entrepreneurs. Agricultural Commissioner Hugh Weathers praised the effort stating, "This is a great example of the teamwork that makes agribusiness our state's Number One industry".

......you think I am joking, right ?!  No, not at all ! That are serious questions people ask me when they move to the Charleston area, to our part which is called the "Low Country" , the main land or to one of our numerous islands. People come here not only from the United States but also from countries in the Far East, from Africa, from Europe, from South America and the Land Down Under.  Just recently I showed property to a family moving here from India. There were worried about the woods which bordered the property line. They were really worried that tigers might roam those woods and eat their children. And how about alligators, do they just roam around on our streets and neighborhoods !? And sharks ! Are the sharks right at the beach just waiting for us to jump in and be their dinner or dessert ?!  We have a lot of wildlife here, and so we shall explain to all who move to our beautiful area that we have dolphins and alligators, all kind of wildlife, beautiful birds incl. brown pelicans and graceful Ibis. But not tigers and bears. The point is, don't find it funny if someone is asking those questions. You never know where they lived before or come from..  And we have roaches and termites, and fire ants.  Not a pretty thing but we have to deal with it by having our homes under termite bond and schedule pest control treatments on a regular basis. A responsible realtor will explain the beauty and the beasts, the flora and fauna. The things to look for to control and treat as they might be different than in Alaska or India or any other place.  Work with a good realtor, one who knows. Farmer's Markets in Charleston South Carolina are 'growing'.  Whether you're on John's Island, Downtown Charleston or near the Lakes in Summerville, you can shop for home grown fruit and vegetables from local farmers.  You'll also find local honey, (great for allergies), homemade breads, gelato, fresh pies and baked goods and arts and crafts. These farmers depend on our support in order to make their living.   Where would we be without our hard working farmers?   Now, the fishermen are joining the weekly outdoor markets.  Mt. Pleasant fishermen are selling the catch of the day at Moultrie Middle School on Saturday mornings from 8am to 12 noon.  Like the farmers, the fishermen go out on the water to make their living.  When they come home with their catch they have to sell it fast before it spoils.  You certainly can taste the difference between freshly caught fish and the supermarket seafood.   Where would we be without our hard working fishermen?  Check online for a list of locations for a fresh, farmer's market near you.  Or take a ride and explore a new area and see what other markets have to offer.  Perhaps the Sunday Brunch Market on James Island where local food trucks serve their specialties!
