    Don’t Miss the View!!!,Kathy Rambo

Have you ever wondered why so many of our Lowcountry porches have blueceilings? The color is called haint blue. Haint blue is a collection of pale shades ofblue-green.                                 Haint is an alternative spelling of haunt used by the Gullah Culture to refer toghost and boo hags. Haint blue was thought by the Gullah people to ward offghost or haints away from the house. The strategy was intended either to mimicthe appearance of the sky, tricking the ghost into passing through, or to mimic theappearance of water, which ghost traditionally could not cross.                                   Over the years the use of haint blue has lost some of its superstitious significance.Today other theories exist. Some believe blue helps to extend daylight as duskbegins to fall. Others believe it helps to keep bugs away (not scientifically proven).Next time you are in Charleston don’t miss the haint blue ceilings.
