  • Dancing to the moon and back - "The Shag" in South Carolina

Dancing to the moon and back - "The Shag" in South Carolina,Ute Appleby

The Carolina Shag  - The South Carolina State dance "The Shag' is a partner dance done primarily to Beach Music. It is a dance recognized in national and international dance competitions held across the United States. A 1989 motion picture, “Shag,” starring Bridget Fonda, Phoebe Cates and Tyrone Power Jr. and filmed largely at Myrtle Beach and Georgetown, S.C., enshrined the dance as a phenomenon of beach culture. The 1980s saw the formation of S.O.S. (Society of Stranders), a shag preservation society at Myrtle Beach. A number of annual events and contests followed, including the Grand Nationals in Atlanta and the Spring Safari and the Fall Migration in Myrtle Beach.   The dance has undergone periodic revivals and rediscoveries and so, to this day, "shagging" is widely popular and there are dancing events in numerous venues throughout the Greater Charleston area.  Choreographers describe the classic shag as a slotted swing dance (the couples move forward and back in a set territory or “slot”). Considerable footwork and improvisation especially for the men, is involved. The shag is sometimes described as a “rooster” dance in that the man generally takes the center of attention, showing off his best moves. Well, and so I hope to introduce you to this fun time dance while searching for a home to buy or to lease in our area. I am sure you will enjoy the journey.  Search for homes on my website www.DefinitelyCharleston.com or mailto: uappleby@gmail.com to get information about the area, neighborhoods, culture and lifestyle in the "Low Country".  Ute Appleby, relocation specialist and realtor  cell: 843.345.2625

  • Oyster Season in Charleston - Yum!

Oyster Season in Charleston - Yum!,Donna Andreano

September is a month most everyone in the Lowcountry has been waiting for...the official start to oyster season! You may have heard 'only eat oysters in a month with the letter R'.  You're sure to hear of oyster festivals happening all over from now until April.   Many people have their own oyster parties at home too.  It's interesting to see a group of people all standing around a sheet of plywood with two holes cut out, set on top of two trash pails. A giant wire basket full of steamy oysters gets dumped in the middle. If you don't have your oyster shucking knife in hand, you're going to miss out.  It's a wonderful gathering place...standing, talking, shucking, eating, laughing and enjoying!   Mark your calendar for these oyster festivals: http://www.sciway.net/shop/sc-oysters.html When buying oysters always buy from a reputable source - LOCAL and don't wait to eat them - FRESH is BEST! Don't be surprised if we're sharing a table one day! Charleston - City of Festivals,Ute Appleby

Charleston - City of Festivals                                              Charleston SC, or as we call it Chucktown or Holy City, is rich on festivals. The biggest one of all is currently running. Don't worry, you can still catch a lot of things as the festival only ends on June 9, 2019, with the Piccolo Finale at Hampton Park, a free event with music and dance and fireworks. Just bring your chairs and a picnic and enjoy! And the Spoleto Festival Finale takes this year place at Riverfront Park in North Charleston, a ticketed event to experience the music of the various bands, food, and fireworks. Prior to this festival, there were quite many including SEWEE Festival and Charleston Food & Wine Festival, and there are many events to follow throughout the year.                                                   No wonder, with all these events and festival and pretty much good weather all year round, people from all over the United States explore Charleston and many visitors stay and make it their home town. One can find homes here in all prices ranges, from $100,000  homes up to 100K to several Million. One can find neighborhoods with and without homeowners associations, and neighborhoods on the water, on a golf course, GOLF COURSE HOMES, and of course in rural areas, and in the City. And so, it is important to work with a local agent, one who is involved in the community and has sold homes in many different areas and price ranges. One who will advise you where best to live after she has studied your wishlist and worked with you to find the right home. Work with an agent who is involved in the community does volunteer work and has diverse interest and hobbies and not just real estate. Work with someone who understands today's technology in the real estate market, one who has kept up with continuous education and thrives to learn every day from fellow agents and their experiences. No Stone Throw Can Break the Spirit of Charleston,Elissa Campbell

Arriving on King Street Sunday morning to help the crowds clean up was devastating. It nearly brought me to tears to see how the Riots from the night before had destroyed our Beloved City. It seemed senseless to see all the smashed in business' windows and hear about stolen ATMs and Cash Registers. The Owner of John King told me his entire bar was stolen, and the cash register ripped out of the counter, as he showed me one of the bricks that the Looters had thrown through his window. The Apple store was wiped clean with the alarm still sounding as we walked by the completely smashed window. What I saw next was a vision of unity, though. Hundreds of locals came out to clean up, board up, and get King Street back together before the 6 PM curfew. It was a beautiful sight after something so tragic.                  Just shortly after recovering from COVID-19, some of my favorite businesses were greatly affected, including Halls Chophouse, which we were just at the evening before. Basil, Juanita Greenberg's, Stars, and Republic were other places I frequent that were hit. I will keep you all posted as these businesses open back up. In the meantime, let's pray for Charleston and every affected city, that the violence will come to an end.
