Gated Communities in the Charleston SC area,Ute Appleby

Gated Communities in Charleston, SC Many times, when I receive inquiries from people who like to relocate to the Charleston area, they ask me about gated communities and they are surprised when I tell them that we really don't have that many choices. Especially people moving here from Florida are astonished because gated communities in that State are very common. So, I am trying to list below those which come to mind, some are small, some are large, with different amenities and homes in various price ranges.  One of the most popular gated communities in Mount Pleasant is Dunes West. It has one of the nicest golf courses in the area, wonderful amenities such as tennis, clubhouse and pools, and spectacular waterfront homes and homes secluded and nestled along the challenging golf course.  There is also Ravens Run, located in Mt Pleasant off Rifle Range Road. Most homes here sit on an acre lot. This community has even its own landing strip for small private airplanes. Very short drive to Isle of Palms and Sullivans Island. A very small gated neighborhood is Park Island is located in Park West in Mt. Pleasant. Gorgeous homes with deep water access. James Island has one gated community - Parrot Creek. It is a relatively small marsh front community, and some of the homes have private docks. There are three gated communities on Johns Island:  Headquarters Island is an island community just off the Stono River bridge. Then there is Kiawah River Estates which has the only golf course on Johns Island. Grimball Gates has a community dock and wildlife viewing areas. Wild Dunes is a gated beach resort community located on the northern end of Isle of Palms. Seabrook Island and Kiawah Island are very upscale resort style living communities. Here is where one finds the very famous Ocean Course golf course, and many amenities such as marinas, tennis centers, horse stables, hotels and spas, shops and restaurants and everything the vacationer or the private resident needs.  Coosaw Creek Country Club is one of the nicest neighborhoods in North Charleston, and it has a golf course. In Goose Creek one finds Crowfield Plantation, which also has a golf course. At "The Hamlets", homes are located right at the golf course. Stono Ferry in Hollywood SC is just a 45 minute drive from downtown Charleston and has beautiful homes on very large lots, a golf course and an equestrian center.
