    Fishing on the Pier,Ute Appleby

What is that great saying: '.....gone fishing..."   Lowcountry fishing - well it takes time to learn it and how to read the tides and the local  waters. If you are inexperienced, it is easy to be stranded on a mudflat and you only get free when the tide comes back in.We are certainly blessed with an abundance of water and this means many places to enjoy fishing and shrimping. The fishing is good in rivers and in the tidal creeks off the Charleston Harbor, the Charleston jetties, and creeks in the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, and the catch can consist of red drum, black drum, sea trout, flounder, and sharks. Every fisherman has their favorite season or part of the year and fishing is especially popular in October and November when the weather begins to cool, and it seems easier to entice a fish to take the bait. Quite possible, fishermen might just throw out a cast net to catch shrimp or they lower bait cages into the salty water to catch crabs.  Here is a list of some area fishing piers where one can go fishing without getting their feet wet. Just bring a chair, your gear, some snacks and enjoy. (Pls know that you do need a fishing license in SC - easy to get online. Pls check for your area or ask for Info in your local tackle store.) +  Mount Pleasant Memorial Park, Mt Pleasant           +  Pitt Street Bridge, Mount Pleasant +  Brittlebank Park, Charleston                                     +  Riverfront Park, North Charleston +  Lake Moultrie, Bonneau                                            +  Folly Beach Pier, Folly Beach +  Remleys Point, Mount Pleasant                                +  Sunrise Fishing Pier, James Island +  Shem Creek Pier, Mount Pleasant                            +  Breach Inlet, Isle of Palms +  Bowens Island Dock, Folly Beach                             + Steam Boat Pier, Edisto Island +  Buck Hall Pier, Awendaw,                                          +  Cherry Landing, Wadmalaw +  John Limehouse Pier, Johns Island                           +  Beresford Creek, Wando +  Sullivans Island Pier, Sullivans Island                        +  Higgins Pier, West Ashley ....and there are many more....…. • 5 Things I Love About Charleston

    5 Things I Love About Charleston,Margaret Marcoe

Charleston is an easy city to fall for with its unrivaled historic architecture, robust culinary scene, picturesque beaches, an abundance of festivities, and year-round temperate weather. Here's a bit more about why I love calling this beautiful city home: 1) Charleston is a city deeply rooted in history and charm. Since colonial times and extending through the Civil War, it held an important role in America's development. For history buffs, it's an endless treasure trove of museums, archaeological sites, and impressive architecture in spots dating back to the 1700s. The perfect afternoon can be spent strolling south of Broad past impressive Victorian mansions, massive live oaks at White Point Gardens, and taking in Fort Sumter across the glistening waters of Charleston harbor. 2) The Holy City continues to make national and international lists for its impressive restaurant offerings. There are King Street mainstays like Hall's Steakhouse, which offers unparalleled service and choice cuts of meat. For those looking to explore local offerings prepared in a charming historic home downtown, Sean Brock's Husk is an outstanding choice that consistently ranks as one of the top restaurants in the Southeast. Whatever your taste, Charleston consistently delivers on an evolving dining scene. 3) Charleston is one of those few cities that offers both urban vibes while still being a beach town. There are numerous beaches in the Charleston metro area including fan favorites at Isle of Palms, Sullivans Island, Folly Beach, and Kiawah. Personally, I love the IOP breach inlet where I can play fetch with the dog, see dolphins feeding, maybe drop a fishing line, and grab a sunset cocktail at The Boathouse across the street. 4) Another great thing about Charleston is that there is always something to do. Every weekend there is an abundance of festivals, street fairs, music, and cultural offerings. Charleston is truly a city that works off of the mentality that you work to live, not live to work. 5) Finally, you just can't beat the southern climate. The winters are very temperate, with days often reaching the 60s. Summer days are typically in the 80s, perfect for that trip on the boat or to the beach. There's a reason why people are flocking to the Holy City - the overall quality of life is hard to beat. Please contact me to learn more about the city if you are considering a relocation to our wonderful town. • This Cocktail Book Can Help You Win The Neighbor Of The Year Award

This Cocktail Book Can Help You Win The Neighbor Of The Year Award,Jeanne Malota

Hi everyone. Jeanne here. Mike and I recently purchased Holy Spirits! a book about Charleston Culture Through Cocktails. This book is written by two amazing ladies, Johnny Caldwell and Taneka Reaves. I met Johnny and Taneka, aka the Cocktail Bandits, while leading an event at Charleston Wine + Food with Joy the Baker. They were part of the Drake on Cake cooking class and gave a great talk and made a delicious beverage called Morning Motivation for all the guests. (I was not allowed to have it while working but others were raving about it!) After meeting and talking to Johnny and Taneka I was hooked and had to get their book. What is so great about this book is it is not just about making a cocktail. It is so much more. It is about history, culture, and a toast to the Holy City of Charleston. You will learn how to stock a home bar, acquire entertaining tips, and get some great new cocktail recipes. There is even a section for mocktails. For those of you that do not know, mocktails are alcohol free drinks often mixed with fruit juices. Something that I really loved when I opened up the book was seeing this phrase: “to the believers and the dreamers, for never accepting “no” as the answer.” This is so powerful and a reminder that everyone should go for their dream and don’t stop until they have it. Holy Spirits! can be purchased at Evening Post Books. The cost is currently $34.95 and well worth it. You will never look at cocktails the same way again. Are you now wanting your home to have a bigger space to entertain your neighbors and whip up some of the amazing cocktails in this book? Let’s connect to help you find the perfect one. Cheers!  The Mike & Jeanne Team Mike 843-737-1690 Jeanne 843-901-1850 TheMikeandJeanneTeam@AgentOwnedRealty.com TheMikeandJeanneTeam.com

  • You are not dressed without a hat

You are not dressed without a hat ,Ute Appleby

“Major Hats & Suits” in the Old Village of Mount Pleasant and the “Hat Ladies” I visited this shop in the Old Village of Mount Pleasant and was fascinated by the selection of “fascinators” and fedoras and all kinds of different hats for ladies and gentlemen. What a treasure to find! The owner told me that this building has existed since 1947 and the hat shop was opened here at this location in 2005. There are hats of all kinds of shapes and colors and customers, and one can order from a catalog or pick one right in the store. Prices are very reasonable and suit any budget.       This reminded me to tell you about the “Hat Ladies “club  www.hatladies.org we have here in Charleston. Archie Burkel, also known as “Top Hat,” is the founder of this group of ladies group established in 2001 and now also open to gentlemen! In the beginning, she gathered other ladies to join her and wear hats, not just on special events or occasions but also on a regular day!  “Hat Ladies” got together for parades on Carolina Day or other events, and the local newspaper finally wrote an article about these ladies. That is when the membership grew, and to this day, there are ladies not just from d’town Charleston but from many areas around Charleston who are wearing hats proudly to lunches and special occasions, or in parades or special gatherings. Always a beautiful sight to see.  The love of hats is not tied to a particular gender or culture but cuts across all differences. It is the perfect icebreaker and conversation piece. So, if you are looking for a hat, try this shop right here in Mount Pleasant (102 Royall Ave), and I am sure you can find one which suits you perfectly!  For homes in the Old Village or Old Mount Pleasant, please check out my website www.Definitely-Charleston.com or contact me at 843.345.2625

  • FIVE REASONS TO MAKE CHARLESTON YOUR HOME

FIVE REASONS TO MAKE CHARLESTON YOUR HOME,Robert Marquart

If you’re thinking of a move to Charleston, don’t think twice. South Carolina’s oldest city is filled with historic landmarks, enticing local beaches, beautiful homes, and the friendliest neighbors in the world! Charleston has been Travel + Leisure Magazine’s Top City in the United States for 8 years running for all of those reasons and more.       The Friendliness: The first thing you’ll notice if you’re coming in from another part of the country is the change in pace. Strangers will go out of the way to say hello and help you. We will smile, strike up a conversation, and generally make you feel welcome. It’s just part of Southern living! The History: Charleston retains and preserves its history that dates back 350 years. Its nickname, “The Holy City,” comes not only from its founding as a haven for religious freedom but also to the number of church steeples that create the skyline of the city. Local law prohibits any building that exceeds the height of the tallest steeple, St. Mathews Lutheran Church at 255 feet. These steeples were once used to guide ships into one of the most important ports on the east coast.  The Weather: Charleston has the perfect year-round climate. Locals consider a chilly winter day if it gets down into the low 50’s, and we can get the rare snowstorm (see below), but avoiding the harsh northern winters means a trade-off with some pretty hot summer days. Fortunately, there are many beaches and pools to take advantage of. There is nothing like Thanksgiving Dinner on the patio!  The Neighborhoods: There is a neighborhood for every lifestyle. Here’s a quick overview.    Downtown: with its cobblestone streets, old-world feel, and charming alleys, is highly sought after and is a bustling area, especially if you like to shop, dine, and enjoy the nightlife!     The Islands: are year-round residential communities, not just vacation destinations. Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms, and Folly Beach all have their own unique identities. Sullivan’s Island is a great place for a bit of peace and tranquility, while the adjacent Isle of Palms is a great place for family fun. Folly Beach is great for surfing and boating, fishing, and all the great entertainment options.    Moncks Corner: is about an hour from downtown and boasts a small-town feel along with waterside living options and very affordable housing prices. With its closeness to Lake Marion, it is a real up and coming area.    Mount Pleasant: just over the Ravenel Bridge from Downtown and is a growing community that offers shopping, dining, outdoor parks, and activities, as well as being the home of Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island.    Summerville: is full of southern charm, a quaint downtown, affordable homes, and much more.  A great place to live and work!    West Ashley: is across the Ashley River from Downtown and offers older, established neighborhoods like Avondale and Byrnes Downs with a mixture of newer subdivisions like Carolina Bay and Grand Oaks. Close to the beaches, the historic Plantations, and much more.        The Sites and Events - too numerous to mention, but here are some of my favorites: The Hunley Charleston Tea Garden Charleston Music Hall Angel Oak Shem Creek McLeod Plantation Fort Sumter Charleston Harbor Tours Gibbes Museum of Art Patriots Point Charles Towne Landing Charleston Museum City Market The Battery Live in Charleston, and you can add to this list every day!  Let me help you find your perfect Lowcountry Life.
